Elmhirst’s Resort has been described as a colony of self catering cottages on the shores of Rice Lake. It is so much more. Activities abound for those who want to be active and for those who want to relax and enjoy the bucolic wonder of country.
Outdoor pursuits are a natural in our lakeside setting – well marked trails are accessible for hikers, walkers, joggers, cyclists and birdwatchers. In winter the trails become snowshoe or cross country ski routes.
Kiteboarders/Snowkiters

Kiteboarding or snowkiting, is fast becoming a popular sport with those who don't want to share the snow or make tracks with a crowd. On any windy day you will see kiteboarders zigzagging across Rice Lake in front of the Resort. The kites are secured to the waist - after a few lessons you can snowboard, ski or sled by kitepower. The Family Kiteboarding Weekend was so successful in late January that it will be an annual event. Enthusiasts are out on the lake (ice) most weekends - they are happy to talk kiteboarding and demonstrate the new sport to interested adventure seekers.

Central Park features a safe, family play area with the Ark in the Park (a wooden activity center for all ages and levels); horseshoes; tennis; basketball, badminton and beach volleyball courts. It’s not unusual to see a rollerblade hockey game or ball hockey tournament going on. Playgrounds with benches for parents are situated throughout the grounds.
Kayaks, canoes, peddleboats and waterbikes await you on the sandy beach, which is fine for swimming or creating sandcastles. The waterski dock is busy in summer as tubing and waterskiing are offered as a part of the recreation program. In winter this area becomes a skating rink for family skates or pick up hockey games – snowmobilers and skiplanes find this an attractive pass by, providing entertainment for dining room guests.
Boat and motor rentals are available throughout fishing season – anglers will enjoy panfish in April, bass in late June, walleye or pickerel, muskie in the fall. Rice Lake is a prolific lake for fish so try going out on your own or hire a guide for a great angling experience. Many guests return with their grandchildren to experience the early morning fishing expedition before breakfast. Our fleet of 14 foot aluminium boats are rented with a 9.9 hp or 40 hp motor – pontoon boats are easy to load and very comfortable for touring. As the boats are popular we recommend you book in advance.
Adventurers will enjoy our guided ATV Safaris and in winter our guided snowmobile safaris – city slickers in particular are keen to ride their own machine and we provide helmets and gear as required. Check out the Snow Banshee Package.
